4th Somló Juhfark Celebration

As a result of deliberate work in recent years, Somló has caught up with the recognized, great wine regions of the world. This is evidenced by the most prestigious international recognitions and the growing interest of the world market every year. The volcanic soil of the hill and the microclimate together with the local varieties produce wines with a taste that are unique in the whole world. The most attention is directed to the Juhfark, as this rather neutral variety can express the strengths of the terroir best. That is why, in 2016, Somló winemakers decided to celebrate their special treasure every year by displaying the best wines made from it at a representative tasting to the public. This year 25 wines of 16 cellars.

The program was enriched by master classes, vineyard and cellar tours. This year's vertical Tornai tasting featured a rare opportunity to compare the best Juhfark wines of the past decade and a half, and Attila Fiáth’s (WSET) master class attracted also great public and professional interest. The expert compared some of the top wines of the Italian volcanic wine regions with Somló Juhfark wines. At the blind tasting, Somló wines did well in the competition, 2017 Tornai Premium Juhfark challenged its rival from Etna's volcanic soil, and Báint Barcza's 2017 Juhfark Selection was only one vote behind the same Italian wine in the overall competition. The event was made even more memorable by the selected grill food and the summer-like pleasant weather.

The series will continue, of course, and next October the winemakers and fans of the variety will meet again at the 5th Somló Juhfark Celebration.
