Our Story

The Tornai family has been dealing with winemaking since 1946 on Mt. Somló

The Mt. Somló, a mountain that rises sharply out of the flat area. Endre Tornai, the founder, started viniculture and winemaking on a one-acre vineyard. Today the land measures 54 acres and it is the third generation now that is engaged in the everyday tasks of the wine-cellar.

The ars poetica of our business, besides respecting traditions, is the use of state-of-the-art winemaking and processing technologies. The Tornai Winery as the dominant winery of Mt. Somló, based on several decades of experience, is the initiator and supporter of the wine-production co-operation of the region. We do this so that the wines of Mt. Somló can preserve their values both on a national and international level.

The Mount Somló

The wine region

"Somló (German: Schomlau, the corresponding adjective, meaning of Somló as in wines of Somló in Hungarian is: somlói) is a 832 hectare wine region in the Veszprém and Vas counties, in the North-West of Hungary. Most of the region is situated on the slopes of an extinct volcano, crowned by the ruins of an 11th-century castle, overlooking the plain. The wines of Somló, exclusively white, are made out of the grape varieties Hárslevelű, Furmint, Juhfark, Welschriesling, Traminer and Chardonnay. [from: Wikipedia]" More »

Wine-production in our winery is based on the top quality raw material prepared with extensive expertise and great care

The cellar has been built in compliance with the latest technological requirements. Following the gentle processing of grapes, steel tanks are used for controlled winemaking carried out with the help of reductive technology. 

The best selected raw materials, after the 12-hour soaking on skin, are, in accordance with the traditions, fermented in 500-l oak barrels and mellowed for 8 to 10 months. The stainless steel tanks have a capacity of 9,000 hl and out of this, 4,200 hl can be cooled. In the rest area there are 60 Hungarian barrique barrels.

"Harvest time depends mainly on the ripening of the grapes and their characteristics. In the Top Selection category harvesting is possible only by hand. After having been picked, the grapes get to the processing plant within 1 hour and then their processing starts." More »

"Plant protection activities are carried out on the basis of forecasts, in accordance with the rules of integrated cultivation. Besides chemical protection, we lay a special emphasis on agrotechnical and biological protection. As a result, a lot of attention is paid to the selection of shoots, cleaning the trunk, and removing side shoots during cultivation." More »

The vineyard

"The Tornai Winery has a total area of 56 ha, including a 53.5-ha vineyard and a 2.5-ha area still to be planted with grapevine. Vine-stocks were planted between 1997 and 2003 and also in 2009. In the case of plantations established before 2003 a spacing of 2.4 m x 1 m was used (4,166 stocks/ha), including varieties such as: juhfark, furmint, hárslevelű, olaszrizling, korona, sárfehér, dessert." The cellar has a bottling plant where, beyond our own wine, the wines produced by a number of other wine-growers in the region are bottled.
